Trenton Board of Education to Rename Two Schools

>The Trenton Board of Education announces the formation of a committee to move forward on the renaming of Columbus Elementary School and Wilson Elementary School. This committee will closely follow the direction of Trenton District Policy Number 7250.

There will be a community forum for all interested to discuss the renaming process on Monday, March 14, 2022, in the Ellis Auditorium at 108 North Clinton Avenue beginning at 6:00 pm. All Trenton residents are welcome and encouraged to submit their recommendations for names/entities to replace the current names. In order to do this, residents may download the “School Renaming form for Columbus Elementary School” and/or “School Renaming form for Wilson Elementary School” from the district website www.trenton.k12.nj.us. The form will be posted and available. Each form will require that all fields are completed. Included with all submissions should be a statement no more than 500 words as to why the person/entity is qualified to have the facility named after them/it. The following criteria should be taken into consideration when submitting a name:

● Each name shall be known to, and significant to, the people of the district.
● The names submitted shall not conflict with the names of other schools in the district or surrounding districts; and
● The use of names of living persons shall be avoided unless circumstances warrant an exception.

Completed forms are to be returned to the Business Administrator/Board Secretary no later than March 24, 2022. Once all submissions have been received, the committee will review and select at least three but no more than 5 to be presented to the entire school board for consideration at the April 2022 meeting. Once approved, the changes will take effect in July 2022. Any questions or concerns, please contact TBOE Facilities Chair Jeannie Weakliem at jweakliem@trenton.k12.nj.us.
